First Day of Teaching
Today in line at the Endicott cafe, I bumped into one of my friends, John Kelly, a psychology professor, who was buying exactly what I was buying — a diet coke. It was 2 in the afternoon and I was exhausted. So was he, or so he said. He may have been being polite, but I believed him. He looked the way I felt — tired of talking, tired of charming new frightened students out of their shells, just plain tired. Maybe we will feel better when all of this becomes routine, I said. He agreed. Beginnings are stressful, he said, and he is a psychology professor so he should know.
