Norton forgets to Remember the Ladies

I just discovered that Abigail Adams’ letter to John is Not in the brief edition of the Norton Anthology. How can this be? Here’s a great link to her most famous letters http://www.thelizlibrary.org/suffrage/abigail.htm. It also tells great stories: How Sybil Ludington warned her town that the British were coming and rode twice as far as Paul Revere. How come we never hear about her?

Here is one of my favorite Abigail quotes. She is writing to John, the spring before the Declaration of Independence: “I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors.

Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands.”
