New Year Baby
Today I met Socheata Poeuv. She came to Endicott to screen her documentary about her family’s experience in the killing fields of Cambodia — New Year Baby. She is that baby. She was born in a refugee camp on the Cambodian New Year. She was the lucky one, her parents said. Socheata and I had dinner together before she gave her talk and she said she is currently producing a new movie about Burma and also working on a project to help other survivors of the Khmer Rouge to tell their stories — Khmer Legacies. Click here to see more about her film. My students had never heard about the Khmer Rouge or Cambodia or America’s secret bombings or Pol Pot, so there is a real need for people to see this movie to learn about the Cambodian genocide. Otherwise, it will be forgotten.
